David, a somewhat aloof but idealistic architect has taken on the re-development of a South London slum with the “do-good” intention of providing well-built and attractive new housing for the masses. Budget constraints force him to compromise more and more, and he ends up having to design high rise tower blocks that keep getting taller as the number of obstacles in his way increase.
His wife, Jane, forever the pragmatist, grapples with her loyalty to him and his “cause” and loyalty to their friends whose floundering marriage cries out for her help. Her good intentions backfire horribly and end up being the ultimate undoing of their marriage and worse still, the ultimate failure of David’s project.
The “hapless” friends, Sheila, the quiet and needy put-upon wife and Colin, her cynical and sometime cruel husband, turn out to be the real puppet-masters of the piece as the dynamics in the relationships shift and true colours are revealed.
“Progressive Collapse” an architectural term for the tower blocks, becomes a metaphor for the collapse of a marriage and a friendship.
The plot unfolds in a series of scenes both present and past, where the actors address the audience directly, think out loud and move seamlessly between the 1980’s and 1960’s on a minimalistic set. The characters are multi-layered , the comedy subtle, the language beautiful and the structure elegant.
It’s an exciting and challenging piece of theatre.
Please note: This is an amateur production, and there will be no payment.
Opening at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg on 14 March is Derek S. Royle's 's uproariously funny farce "Flat Spin" - directed by Wendy Goddard for Muizenberg Dramatic Society.
David and Jane Kenway have a very happy marriage living in a flat in Wavertree Mansions with their five year old son Billy and their stack of unpaid bills. David is an actor and Jane looks after their home, an idyll of peace and harmony … Until into this oasis of perfection appears one mouse and an upstairs neighbour who in the space of two glasses of wine turns Jane (and the absent David’s) world upside down!
Meet the characters who complicate David and Jane’s life beyond belief, from a crazy lighting “expert”, wielding lighting stands with disastrous results, to a film director who speaks only Italian! Oh, and let’s not forget a talkative middle-aged lady who is convinced that she’s witnessed a murder and sends for the police. And then there’s the rather sweet, but slightly camp, advertising agent and David’s uncle, the Brigadier who certainly won’t stand for any nonsense.
This is the stuff of which farce is made and this 1960s Whitehall Farce, for which Brian Rix was justifiably famous, is one of the zaniest. If you enjoy a good night out and like a laugh – this is definitely for you!

Claremont Dramatic presents Noël Coward's Private Lives at the Masque Theatre, Muizenberg. This production, directed by John Carne, will run from 21 Feb. to 1 March 2014.
Noël Coward’s hilarious and risqué comedy of manners, Private Lives, tells the sophisticated tale of a recently divorced couple who find themselves in adjoining hotel rooms while on honeymoon with their new – a wholly unsuitable – spouses. In typical Coward fashion, the play is liberally sprinkled with fast and hilarious repartee and the hint of farce. Witten from Coward’s sickbed in Shanghai in 1930, Private Lives is considered as his finest comedy and a “pure statement of Cowards genius”.

An aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on. His continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence—a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending of the play.
